Universal Technical Institute

Founded in 1965, Universal Technical Institute is a nationwide chain of schools providing education for those who want to pursue a career in the trades. They prepare their students for careers in automotive repair, CNC machining, welding, and other in-demand occupations.

A big part of their marketing strategy in increasing enrollments is telling the stories of students who have found success after graduation. Justin T. Pawlak may be the most well-known graduate of Universal Technical Institute, who has achieved much in the drift racing scene. Known for his aggressive style of driving, as well as working on his own cars, he's a great example of what's possible after graduating from UTI.

For this piece, I researched drift racing to better understand what it's all about. I then did a phone interview with Justin, focusing on how UTI shaped who is, as well as his journey in the drift racing scene.
